funnily, it's amazing how close are spanish and greek pronuntiations. in fact, spanish speaking greek and greeks speaking spanish have no accent at all! and it's not that awful, it's very interesting and sounds... just great!

Herete (and not XERETE) is used a lot...because herete is used for all cases, even when you meet friends. But Ya Sou (and not Geia sou) is used strictly for informal greeting.

When using Greek words in Roman font X = H and the correct spelling of Ya sou is actually Geia Sou. The way you have spelled it would NOT sound correct if actually spoken.

I believe almost everybody in this thread speaks in English, and since it's a common language in here i explained my argument in plain English meaning that the linguistic part should be in English spelling as well(i.e. X sounds like "ks" like "eXit").In The International Phonological Alphabet Geia sou or Ya sou is written>|

I was born into the Greek language. It IS Geia Sou, G=Y sounds. The way you have spelled it (Yia Su) is incorrect, Gia or Yia means FOR. So, Yia Su would mean "for you." Geia Sou, is correct, because Geia Sou is derived from Stin Geia Sas, which is "To Your Health!" It's an expression said at toasts, it was shortened to Geia Sou or Geia Sas depending on the formality. Hence, Geia Sou.

I am greek. when we want to say goodbye we use mostly the word geia
γειά.Its better if you used the word adio. An+DIO(like the singer). PARAKALO also means "please".For what is your name the exact translate is "pio ine to onoma sas?" ,but if you want to ask somebody's name you should say "Pos se lene?". seegh-NO-mee (συγνώμη) means i'm sorry. if you want
to say excuse me you should say "meh seegh-ho-ree-te"
