Squirrel Memory test? MUST SEE!!!!!

Uploaded by: DickGhostmoon
Video Description:
This entry for NewScientist proves that squirrels don't smell nuts. A squirrel's memory is phenomenal. If you try this experiment at home it is important to distinguish between different squirrels. In this experiment there were three of them. All three squirrels exhibited the same memory traits: They always returned to the same position. Collectively they made over 300 separate trips and seemed to work as a team to systematically clear the hoard of nuts. Here is a link to NewScientist's Channel on Youtube, I highly recommend their channel:
http://uk.youtube.com/profile?user=newscientistvideo I would love to be able to delve deeper into animal science at dawn/dusk but my camcorder is limited to bright sunny days, I don't expect to win the competition so I'll keep saving for a better quality video camera. Burrying nuts, never more t
han one or two per cache, leaves the squirrel with food stashed in thousands of different sites. The squirrel therefore ensures it will not loose everything in a single theft, but it must pay the price by having to remember where all those nuts were cached.

Awesome video. I really enjoyed it. Looks like it was a fun experiment to preform as well. I have a new sense of respect for the common squirrel. Thanks for sharing this knowledge.

Yes I've seen the same thing here. I've seen a squirrel jump over a cat aswell. It would take loads of patients and time to film it though.

Next time, do it with wild and domestic pigeons. My famly breeds both wild and domestic birds, and I can tell you with experience that the results should have both surprising and non-surprising. Do like you did with the squirrel, but also test thier colour vision as well. That should be where the differences start.
Good point. ... ( 3 weeks ago by DickGhostmoon)
Good point. Domestic pigeons seem to defy logic. How do they find their way back home if released a hundred miles away? I'd love to do an experiment with them.
Ok, this is how it ... ( 3 weeks ago by DaniMart2005)
Ok, this is how it works: The pigion firsts finds its current location by global magnetism (sensors in the upper beak find's the earths magnetic field) then usng the sun or moon and stars, it gets its general direction back home, traveling along land marks like roads, buildings, statues. Then when it sees a familiar landmark near to home, it travels along a very specific path back to the coup and to its mate.
Another thing, the ... ( 3 weeks ago by DaniMart2005)
Another thing, the only true differences between a wild and the domestic pigeon is their colour, feather shapes and sizes, Visual field and colour perseption, as well as muscle strength. Wild pigeons are strong flyers, larger size, great visual field but low colour perseption. Domestic species of pigion are weaker flyers, smaller size, poor visual field but a slightly greater colour perseption. Wild's are good puzzle and map solvers, domestic's are good at math and understanding human words.
Oh ok that's ... ( 3 weeks ago by DickGhostmoon)
Oh ok that's interesting. However, I've heard people talk about covering a pigeon cage, then driving a hundred miles and then releasing the pigeon, and it still finds it's way back. So landmarks make no difference. I can't fathom how their magnetism works.
Imagin you are a ... ( 2 weeks ago by DaniMart2005)
Imagin you are a flying Video camera, recording every road, building, and statue you fly by. Now Rewind and play back. If you did not fly by those buildings, or along the road on your previous flight, you would be clueless as to wich direction to go. When the brd is out of the cage, it has no idea where it is, and has know idea how to get back. So with the help of special cells in the upper beak, it can feal the direction, strength, and speed of the earths magnetic field, (next comment)
now its moves ... ( 2 weeks ago by DaniMart2005)
now its moves closer to what ever magnetic field position feels right. At the same time, it looks for common things like the sun, stars, moon to help give it more direction. Now that it is really close to home, it now flys along fimiliar paths and structures like roads and buildings, until it visually sees the coupe, and comes home. A pigion in general uses a "mental map", a very sensitive compase in the upper beak, general direction from sun and stars, and alot of guess work and gut instinct.
