I purchased the Michel Thomas Italian foundation course from The Language Specialist on Amazon for a bargain price and have found Michel Thomas course, so effective and there is nothing out there that could compete with his style of teaching. I have learned so much Italian in 1 week, that i can't wait to practice in Italy. The best thing about MT audiobooks is the fact you don't need to take notes, no homework. It's so easy it actually unrealistic. Can't wait to learn Spanish and german next.

I think "Salve!" actually means "Salutations!" rather than "Hello!", think of French "Salut!"

to eyeluv2dance.. they were speaking of the Rome decent.
and for dehax.. buon giorno means good morning (you dont just say it when you see your dad in the morning, but any time during the day when you see anyone) and salve means hello or salut, but only old people in italy say that and its very formal, so you would really say ciao, or buon giorno

English speakers can't understand the polite form in European languages. We dropped the polite form (Thou) centuries ago tho it can still be found in Shakespeare and the Bible. In Italian, as in most European languages, one begins with the polite, formal, third person form of Lei. This is for business and commercial speaking, church, and with older or official people. One continues in Lei until the recipient asks for informal or second person. How many close friends can a tourist have?

"You are welcome" is an American expression, although it has started to be used by some British speakers. It might have been useful to add that "prego" is a response to "grazia" or when handing something to someone (I presume that is correct?) rather than what someone might say as a visitor enters their house ("Welcome!").

Second question: Does "Il bagno" mean a "bath" (a thing you get into to wash yourself all over) or does it, like the American "bathroom", serve as a euphemism for "toilet"?
