Most of the original blues musicians were not expressing their "anguish". They were just playing what the white people wanted to hear, which was authentic sounding black music. They were rock stars in every sense of the word. Playing what was the coolest thing around for the money, not for the emotional ventilation.

False, the original bluesmen played for blacks, their peers. They didn't sing to express their angst, but they did sing iof their lives and their experiences. They also sang to express their likes and dislikes in thir world. Singin for white folks? Not

there's a part in the scorsese documentary in which one of the old blues guys says that in the old days they couldn't openly say what they thought of racism and white people in general so they spoke in code. They don't actually want to kill women, that's ridiculous. These slang terms for women, prostitutes, etc, all refer to the white man. We're talking about music written by black people in the racist south for other black people.

It's just a song about a guy who got tired of his woman looking down on him and treating him bad so he killed her and buried her, but afterwards he felt sorry for what he did. This song is the lament of a man who committed murder... there are no "coded messages".

I thought "crow jane" referred to a woman who upholds the jim crowe laws. I know old blues men used colorful words and built off each others songs, Here's something to thing about, could the song "Hey Joe" be the other side of the story Skip James is telling. Written as if he was watching the man get his gun, and shoot down his crow jane.

ans, and I can think of zero "white" musicians who were trying to provide that or ripping off James then. In the '60s, most people who were interested in James were "white."
